Uffington - St Mary
A grand church built in 1250 using imported sandstone, known locally as 'the cathedral in the vale'. Its size, disproportionate to the area, being owed to the villages link with the Abbey in Abingdon.
The west wall of the church was damaged during the English Civil War, evidence of the rebuilding can still be seen in the disparate masonry used.
The central tower is a replacement for the original steeple which collapsed during a storm in 1740.
